Since then, JJ - who also captained UCT in the 2009 tournament - has come to the attention of USA rugby scouts and he made his Test debut, off the bench, for his adopted country (he qualifies for the Eagles through his mother) against Uruguay in November 2008.
JJ has gone on to start a Test for America - against Georgia - as well as picking up his debut try - against Six Nations giants Wales - and he is hopeful of being part of the American squad at the 2011 World Cup in New Zealand.
A hard-working No.8 or blindside flank, in the mould of former Bok skipper Gary Teichmann, JJ matriculated from top Cape Town rugby school Bishops in 2003 - following in the footsteps of Robbie Fleck, Selborne Boome and Dave von Hoesslin - all of whom played for the Boks in the 1990s after attending Bishops.
JJ will play Varsity Cup rugby once again in 2010, having also spent a few months on loan with Italian Super 10 club, Rugby Roma, in 2009.
He is now playing Currie Cup rugby for the Mighty Kings in Port Elizabeth.
